Subtitles

Subtitle formats, track selection, online search, delay and appearance settings in JellyWatch Player.

Formats

TypeHow it is shown
SRT, VTT, TTML and other text subtitlesDrawn by the app on top of the video, so you can style them
ASS and SSADrawn on the device with libass, with their original fonts, colours and positions. If libass cannot load, the server burns them into the video.
PGS, DVB and VobSub (image subtitles)Decoded on the device by default
External subtitle filesLoaded when your server provides them

If an embedded font is needed, the app loads it. The Stats overlay shows the number of fonts loaded.

Settings → Playback → Burn in styled subtitles asks the server to burn ASS and SSA subtitles into the video. This causes a transcode.

Choose a track in the player

Open the Subtitles button in the player. You can pick a track, choose Off, or Search online…. The menu is available even when the file has no subtitle track.

Track selection settings

Settings → Subtitles → Track selection:

SettingChoices
Subtitle modeFlagged (default/forced), Always, Foreign audio only, Forced/signs only, None
Preferred language and Fallback languageA language, or None
Prefer SDH/CCChoose hearing-impaired subtitles when available

Your choice of track is remembered per title.

Online subtitle search (Jellyfin)

  1. In the player, open Subtitles → Search online….
  2. Type a language code (for example en, fr or de). The field starts with your device language.
  3. Select Search. Results show the name, a Forced tag and the number of downloads.
  4. Select a result. The subtitle is downloaded to your server and added to the track list for everyone.

This works through a subtitle provider plugin on your Jellyfin server (OpenSubtitles or OpenSubtitles V3, for example). Your admin must install and configure it. If there is none, you see No subtitles found for this language. You do not need an account in the app. Select About subtitle search for an explanation.

Open the Subtitle delay panel from the player to move subtitles earlier or later in small steps, or reset them. There is a similar Audio delay panel.
