Match Frame Rate (Display Mode Switching)

Switch your TV refresh rate and resolution to match the video for judder-free playback. TV only.

What it does

Films are usually 24 frames per second, but many TVs run at 60 Hz. The mismatch causes judder. Match frame rate asks your TV to change its refresh rate to fit the video when playback starts, and restores the original mode when you leave the player.

This feature is for TVs and streaming boxes. It is not on phones and tablets.

Settings

Go to Settings → Playback:

Match frame rateSwitch the TV refresh rate to the video frame rate (24p, 25p, 30p…)
Match resolutionAlso switch the display resolution to the video resolution. Shown only when Match frame rate is on.
Sync playback to displayAdjusts the playback speed slightly to fit the display refresh rate. Choices: Off, Only if no matching display mode, Always.

The Stats overlay in the player shows a Display Sync line, for example 1.001× → 24 Hz, when speed adjustment is active.

Seamless and non-seamless switches

  • A seamless switch (for example 60 Hz to 120 Hz at the same resolution) is invisible.
  • A non-seamless switch (for example 60 Hz to 24 Hz) can blank the screen for about two seconds while the TV locks on. The player waits for the display to settle before showing video.

Supported devices

It works on devices that expose several display modes to Android. Most NVIDIA Shield, Sony Bravia (Google TV) and Chromecast with Google TV devices do. Some budget boxes only expose one mode, so the feature has no effect there.
