Add a Jellyfin Active Sessions Widget to Your Android Home Screen

Imagine glancing at your Android home screen and instantly seeing: 2 active sessions - MyHomeServer. No app to open, no dashboard to load. Just the information you need, always visible.

This is exactly what the JellyWatch home screen widget delivers - a live at-a-glance view of your Jellyfin server's activity, right on your launcher.

What the JellyWatch Widget Shows

The widget displays real-time stats pulled directly from your Jellyfin server:

StatDescription
Active SessionsNumber of streams currently playing
Server NameThe name of your active Jellyfin server
Total UsersNumber of users registered on the server
Library ItemsTotal count of media items across all libraries
Connected DevicesNumber of devices registered with the server

The widget has a manual refresh button (tap the circular arrow) and updates automatically every 15 minutes in the background.

Requirements

  • Android 7.0+ (API 24 or higher)
  • JellyWatch installed and connected to at least one Jellyfin server
  • JellyWatch Premium subscription (the widget is a Premium feature)
  • A launcher that supports resizable app widgets (most Android launchers do)

How to Add the Widget

Step 1 - Subscribe to Premium (if you haven't already)

  1. Open JellyWatch
  2. Navigate to Settings → Premium
  3. Tap Subscribe and complete the purchase via Google Play Billing
  4. Premium activates immediately

Step 2 - Long-Press Your Home Screen

  1. Return to your Android home screen
  2. Long-press on an empty area of the home screen
  3. Tap Widgets in the menu that appears

Step 3 - Find the JellyWatch Widget

  1. Scroll through the widget list (or search for "JellyWatch")
  2. You will see the JellyWatch Sessions Widget with a preview
  3. Long-press the widget and drag it to the desired position on your home screen

Step 4 - Resize and Position

Once placed, you can resize the widget by long-pressing it and dragging the handles. The widget adapts its layout to fit different sizes while keeping all stats visible.

Step 5 - Verify It's Updating

The widget should populate with your server data within a few seconds of being placed. If it shows "Loading…" for more than 30 seconds:

  • Make sure JellyWatch has network access
  • Open JellyWatch and verify the server connection is working
  • Tap the refresh button on the widget

Light and Dark Theme Support

The JellyWatch widget automatically adapts to your Android system theme:

JellyWatchTry JellyWatch — Your Jellyfin companion, everywhere.
  • Dark mode: dark background with light text - matches AMOLED-optimized launchers like Nova or Niagara
  • Light mode: clean white card with colored accent icons

The widget respects Android 12's dynamic theming (Material You) on supported devices.

How Often Does the Widget Update?

ModeInterval
Automatic background updateEvery 15 minutes
Manual refresh (tap button)Instant
App openedTriggers an immediate widget refresh

Note: Android limits background widget updates to conserve battery. The 15-minute interval is the system minimum enforced by Android. For more frequent updates, open the JellyWatch app directly.

Troubleshooting

Widget shows "-" instead of numbers Your server may be unreachable. Check your network and verify the server URL in JellyWatch settings.

Widget stopped updating Battery optimization may be killing the update worker. Go to Settings → Apps → JellyWatch → Battery and set it to Unrestricted.

Widget not appearing in the widget picker Make sure JellyWatch Premium is active. The widget is hidden from the picker for free users. Open JellyWatch and check your Premium status in Settings.

Widget crashes on placement This is rare but can happen on custom MIUI launchers. Try using Nova Launcher or the stock Android launcher instead.

Why the Widget Changes Everything for Jellyfin Admins

Before the JellyWatch widget, the only way to know your server activity was to:

  1. Open JellyWatch or a browser
  2. Navigate to the sessions screen
  3. Wait for data to load

With the widget, that three-step process becomes a one-second glance. For admins who check their server multiple times a day, this is a massive quality-of-life improvement.
